Back in bloom

It's been a while between blogs, which I will put down to acclimatizing to a new city.

Last week I did my first big floral event as a freelance florist, with B Floral at the Union Square ballroom. It was endless hours of cleaning literally tens of thousands of flowers (24,000 in fact) and then a full day of putting them into leaking water vials in a freezing room on a literally freezing day.

So. Much. Fun.

I imagine not all jobs finish with a signature cocktail, so I was sure to enjoy a few.....

Wild Bunch in Bloom

This bunch kind of reflects me today after 2 hours sleep (god damm you jet lag). Trying to pull it together but a bit of a mess. It works better on the bunch than it does on me. 

Britt in Bloom Part 1

For my little sister's 20th birthday dinner, I wanted to do something that wasn't too pretty and feminine. She is really into dark greens, browns, wood and red at the moment, a bit of a Ralph Lauren 70s vibe.

Unfortunately, the day after Mother's Day it's hard to find anything other than white chrysanthemums.

So I went with this pink and green palate. I tried to ground the sweet pink roses with the lime green chrysanthemums, and added some magnolia leaves for a bit of brown. I used the dark pink tulips more for their leaves, although as the flowers have opened the darker pink is adding a new visual element which I'm really enjoying.

Pink in bloom

My little baby friend, Sara, turned one today. Yesterday she had a rad party. She's not a huge pinky girl, in fact she for her party outfit she was rocking a pair of leopard leggings with a faux fur vest. But I struggled to get past pink with her blooms, as there wasn't much around (and I was too lazy to hit the flower markets). Forgive me, baby?

Yucca in Bloom

Onomatopoeia is one of my favourite words, because not only does it mean to  imitate or suggest the source of the sound that it describes, I think it also does sound like what it describes.

But what about words that describe what they describe, like orange? What are they called?

Whatever the answer, Yucca flowers are definitely not one of them. They are pretty much the opposite of Yuck. Is there a word for that? 

This is what a Yucca looks like when you bring it home. Unfortunately I'm not rich enough to own a vase that can hold it. So I had to chop it up. Sorry Yucca! 

Friends in Bloom

Last week one of my friends asked me to create a bunch of blooms for one of my other friends. So nice. He used the words 'big, experimental and creative' in his brief. So, no pressure. 

Doing a big bunch was really nerve racking. My small hands and lack of arm definition made it very difficult to hold the bunch, and I actually felt sore for a few days! But  in the end, it was well worth the strain and the early weekend wake-up calls. 

Dahlias in Bloom

I found this information on the meaning of Dahlias: 

Dahlia’s are spicy flowers, and their meanings range from a sign of warning, to change, to travel, to even a portent of betrayal. The varied symbolic meanings of the dahlia make this flower a wild card. Give to that unique, eclectic person whom you wish to compliment his/her wild side. Combine them with slender flowers like irises or tulips for a striking visual display as well as a combined symbolic message that says “temper your adventures with a kind heart".

I think they're darling. 

The Hobette in Bloom

In a week that is as wet and rainy and miserable as this one has been,  flowers (and alcohol) are the only things that will brighten things up. Alas, I have had no time to even think about flowers, or alcohol. 

So back to through the files I go, and find a party I put on quite some time ago for my lovely friend Paulina Hobbs and her beautiful bump, who we used to call the Hobette, but now we call Sara. The bump is coming up for her first birthday now, so you can see this is quite old. But it was raining heavily too that day, so it kind of feels like now. 

The theme was Mad Hatter, and my inspirations were red velvet, plum, emerald green, baby pink & baby blue. Just a bit mad really!  Pic are by Emma D.
